Circle of Saints

Circle of the Saints tour,
i.e. All Karamats in the Cape

South African history was greatly influenced by the slaves at the Cape and this we will clearly see when we visit the Kramats of the Cape. During our Circle Of the Saints Tour we re-live the experiences of the torch-bearers of Islam in South Africa. Our fore fathers were brought to the Cape as political exiles and slaves from places afar as Goa, Banten, Macassar to name but a few, and spread the Religion of Islam. We will visit the burial grounds of Sheikh Yusuf, Noorul Mubien, Tuan Guru, Sheikh Mogammad Gheibi Shah and Sheikh Matebe Shah and learn about their lives and struggles, which will give us an idea of their life styles. We visit the Auwal Mosque, the first Mosque in Cape Town, view the hand-written Quraan and have a feeling of what these pioneers felt when making their prayers.

    Sheikh Noorul Mubeen:

  • Sheikh Noorul Mubeen was apparently banished to the Cape in 1716 and was incarcerated on Robben Island. According to popular legend he escaped from Robben Island by unknown means and came to make his home in this desolate spot.
  • Tuan Guru:

  • Of the Auliyah buried at the Tana Baru, Imam Abdullah ibn Kadi Abdus Salaam, (Tuan Guru) is the best known. He was a prince from Tidore in the Trinate Islands, who traced his ancestry to the Sultanate of Morocco.
  • Sheikh Abdurahman Matebe Shah:

  • He arrived at the Cape on 13th of  May 1668 as prisoner and sent to work n the Company’s forest in Constantia. He was regarded as Orang Cayen, a title which means ‘man of power and influence’ and was considered particularly dangerous to the interest of the Company.
  • Sheikh Yususf:

  • When Sheikh Yusuf arrived at the Cape on the Voetboog, on 27 June 1693, he was royally welcomed by the then Dutch Governorof the Cape , Simon van der Stel. His Indonesian background necessitated the he and his 49 followers be settled well away from Cape Town in order to limit his influence on the normal slaves at the Cape.
