Situated about 10 kilometers from the main land, and in the Table Bay, this was the island which was to become the home of many an unwanted person in the Cape and later in the greater part of South Africa.
Our three and a half hour visit to the Island will clearly teach why this Island became the home of the sick, the mentally challenged and the criminal. We’ll learn about the “University of Robben Island, the quarries and the first navigation beacon of the South African coast, a neat permanent lighthouse which was built in 1864 only 12 years after the Dutch landed at the Cape.
One of the highlights of the visit is the cell of former South African president, Mr. Nelson Mandela.
